The Old Ways
Robert Macfarlane
“It is an exploration of the ghosts and voices that haunt ancient paths, of the tales that tracks keep and tell... Above all, this is a book about people and place: about walking as reconnoitre inwards, and the subtle ways in which we are shaped by the landscapes through which we move.”
Madeira Resident
Pedro Nóbrega
“What we needed was an economy based on our heritage and traditions. What we got was concrete.”

I hoped by traversing the island of my parents’ birth using the old paths I would be better able to understand the people they were. Feeling the land that formed them underfoot, step by step. In the process I hoped to get a better handle on my own heritage. What I found was a land itself in a desperate battle for its own identity.
